Executive Summary

The KwaZulu Natal Development Foundation is a non-governmental organization registered as a Section 21 Company. Its core functions are Skills Training, Counselling and SMME Development; and creating jobs. The Foundation seeks to implement Government's mandate as enunciated in the Small Business Act, the Skills Development Act. The Foundation is spearheaded by a dynamic Board of Management made up of reputable Community Leaders all of whom belong to the PDI's. They come from the ranks of Local Government Councillors, Business Leaders as well as from grassroot levels. Founded in 1996, the Foundation has been in existence for twelve years.

The Foundation is contracted to SEDA (Small Enterprise Development Agency) for the next three years as an Enterprise Information Centre (EIC). As an EIC the Foundation has fulfilled its contractual obligations with distinction.

The Foundation, as an EIC, has provided the following services:
- Business information and technical advice
- Analysis to screen clients for training
- Capturing of clients information on to the SEDA client database
- Making referrals to Provincial SEDA for further intervention

The Foundation has been registered by the Department of Labour as an ESDA Agency (Employment and Skills Development Agency).

Finance

The Foundation has been able to sustain itself for 10 years. The Foundation has audited financial statements and is registered for PAYE, UIF, VAT with SARS. The Foundation has a valid Tax Clearance Certificate to support it.

Specifically, the Foundation interacts in its outreach programmes together with its networking partners in the whole of Kwa Zulu-Natal and progressively into the Republic of South Africa.

Our Projects

  • EIC Programme

Since 2000 the Foundation has provided the following interventions to more than 1000 unemployed emerging and existing entrepreneurs: information dissemination, counselling, business planning, research and business viability, skills training and development. We have created jobs and made entrepreneurs of unemployed learners.

W & R SETA

  • Wholesale and Retail Seta: Project RAVE

Funded by the National Skills Fund the Wholesale and Retail Seta, spearheaded Project Rave nationally. The Project provided Business Skills Training for emerging and existing entrepreneurs in the SMME Sector.

  • Wholesale and Retail Seta: Computer Skills Training

Through Thekwini College and the W&R Seta the Foundation trained 53 learners in basic computer skills.

  • Wholesale and Retail Seta: Project Fundisa

Through the W&R Seta the Foundation trained 49 learners in the following programmes:
Using computers in the wholesale and retail sector
Customer care
Selling Goods and Services

  • Wholesale and Retail Seta: National Certificate in Wholesale and Retail Generalist

In partnership with Ethekwini FET College the Foundation facilitated the above learnership for 30 learners.

  • Wholesale and Retail Seta: Mark Merchandise and Maintain Displays

This year the Foundation trained 90 unemployed individuals for the above learning programme in 2007.

  • Wholesale and Retail Seta: National Certificate in Retail Shop Floor Practices

    In 2007 the Foundation trained 24 learners in the above learnership.

  • ABET Programme

The Foundation has been contracted by the W&R Seta to train ABET Learners in the wholesale and retail sector.

  • Transport Education Training Authority : Business Skills for Taxi Industry

The Foundation engaged in a skills development and entrepreneurship training programme with TETA Taxi Chamber. Learners were trained and mentored in Pietermartizburg.

  • JICA Entrepreneurship Programme

JICA (Japaneese International Co-Operation Agency) funded an entreprenurship programme for 60 learners which was facilitated by the Foundation. Both Business Skills and Basic Computer literacy programmes were included in the programme. Integrated into the programme were business counselling and business leadership.

  • KZN ESDLE – Kwa Zulu Natal Employment And Skills Development Lead Employer

Through the KZN ESDLE the Foundation facilitated the learnership : National Certificate in Sport, Recreation and Fitness leadership for 81 learners. Of this number, 78 learners graduated successfully.

  • Computer Skills Training

The Kwa Zulu-Natal Development Foundation has a fully fitted computer training centre which was sponsored by JICA in 2005, since then the centre has trained approximately 450 learners in computer skills.

  • The GGP Programme – Embassy of Japan

The Foundation has trained 90 learners in business skills and advanced computer skills through the GGP Programme hosted by the Embassy of Japan.

Infrastructure

The Foundation functions from a well situated training centre covering approximately 640 square metres. It is centrally situated at Suite 4, Joosub Centre, Watson Highway, Tongaat. The railway station, taxi and bus ranks are within 1Km from the centre.

The Centre is well-equipped with offices and training rooms, furniture, training resources, Computers and Printers, OHP, Power-Point Projector, White Boards, Flip Charts, Fax Machine, Access to internet and e-mail.

The Centre has a fully networked Computer Training Centre that caters for
20 learners at a time.

The services of the Foundation are portable and can be managed effectively in all parts of KZN. Should the need arise, our services could be provided in provinces outside KZN.
